The new directive will come into effect from March 15th 2026 which will require the filmmakers to include the subtitles in every film along with its audio description wherever it may be applicable. 


Regardless of the language the film will be, the subtitles will be mandatory for all Indian films.

The decision is basically aiming to improve the accessibility for viewers with hearing or visual impairments and generally help the audience at large across different languages as language should never be a barrier to enjoy a film. The move however, sparked a mixed reactions with some netizens who willingly welcomed this initiative while others have not liked the idea and have stated their displeasure and argued on the subtitles may distract the theatrical experience of an immersive of the film narrative.
