Calling it denigrative to a particular set of community an order was passed by the Supreme Court on Thursday under the Apex Court directives on the film Ghooskhor Pandat to change the title before its release.
The bench led by Justice BV Nagarathna warned the filmmaker of the said film that court cannot grant permission to release the film as the title of the film is demeaning a section of a society and also remove other offensive material in the film.
The film was announced by Netflix India earlier this month with a release of its first teaser . However, the teaser only drew lot of criticism from members of Brahmin community who referred the title as derogatory. Pandat is a term used for Hindu Priests or Brahmins. Ghooskhor Pandat stars Manoj Bajyapee in the lead role.
The film faced backlash.
The contention using the words, Ghooskhor which means corrupt or giving bribes and Pandat refers to Pandits or the Hindu priests and Brahmins, received a lot of backlash with protests whereby the effigies of the filmmakers, the star actor and the streaming platforms were burned down in protest against some of the content of the film as well as the title of the film.
After the FIR was filed against the film under the directive of UP CM Yogi Adiyanath in Lucknow, producer Neeraj Pandey issued a statement defending the film while acknowledging his apology for causing hurt by the title. He also took down the promotional materials which include the first look of teaser released on You Tube and the social media.
