On Smita Patil’s death anniversary, actor Raj Babbar remembered his late wife -actress Smita Patil. On Instagram he shared a picture of Smita Patil and penned an emotional and heartfelt note for the actress.


Smita Patil and Raj Babbar were married only for three years


Raj Babbar wrote Smita Patil was truly a great actor and her quality of work defined her off screen, that she was extra ordinarily good. She had profound empathy that captured the struggles of common people and she transformed simple stories into soul stirring anthems for justice. The actor got emotional and penned,’You gave us so little time to know you’ as Smita died really young.


Smita Patil and Raj Babbar had got married in 1983 after they fell in love on the sets of the film Bheegi Palkein in 1982. Raj was already married then to Nadira Babbar and had two children.  Raj and Smita Patil’s love story and marriage lasted only for three years as Smita had an untimely early death due to childbirth complications. She died in a few weeks after the birth of her son Prateik babbar at the age of 31 in 1986.

On her death anniversary Raj Babbar penned recalled how Smita Patil in a short span in the films had won the hearts of the audience with her impeccable acting prowess. She portrayed roles that dared to question the norms and were not the stereotype roles. She did complex roles with a deep understanding of the character she essayed had risen the standard of art films as well as regular films with her role woven perfect in the social fabric that had set her apart from all others.


In the brief span before destiny snatched her away from this world, Smita Patil had achieve a lot more. She has contributed to the parallel cinema in the 80’s and was the recipient of the fourth highest civilian honor or India, Padma Shri.


Smita Patil till date is remembered for her versatile acting in films like Mathan, Arth, Bazaar, Ardh Satya, Waris to name a few which have been her most memorable films.
