Raj Kahani (1997)
Synopsis
The British enacted a statute authorising the division of Bengal in June 1947. Rajkahini, a film by Srijit that delves into the dark history of the Partition, revolves around a boundary between the two countries that passes through a brothel with eleven women in it. Bengal was divided twice (1905 and again during Independence), ostensibly for administrative and demographic convenience, but in reality it was a ploy to stifle Bengali politics. The Radcliffe Line, the border between the newly formed countries of India and East Pakistan, is established in the tale (present day Bangladesh). Another region of Bengal is seeing a conflict between the Muslim League and the Congress over which side of Bengal would receive which area.
