Abhimaan The Musical Journey Of Pride And Love With Amitabh Bachchan

We welcome you to an interesting filmy episode on Amitabh Bachchan’s film career. Today we talk about a very beautiful film that till date people are talking about and the songs are still very popular. We are talking about the film none other than Abhimaan released in 1973.  Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Asrani, Bindu and David.  The film is an emotional musical drama directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

Aalif Surti mentions that this film was loosely based on the story of the Hindustani Classical music maestro  Pandit Ravi Shankar and his wife Annapurna Devi.  However Hrishikesh Mukherjee also stated that the film was also on the life of Kishore Kumar and his first wife Ruma Ghosh. However the film also had lot of controversial talks that the film actually was based on the married life of Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan.  Their marriage had been iconic and soon after their marriage Jaya Bachchan decided to quit acting and concentrate on her family and kids.

The film is best remembered for its songs composed by S D Burman and lyrics written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and the playback is by Kishore Kumar , Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. Jaya Bachchan won the Filmfare Award for the Best Actress for this film.

The story goes as this. Subir a professional singer who has a soaring career meets Uma a sweet village girl who is gifted with beautiful voice. Subir falls in love with her and proposes to her.  They both get married and he brings his wife to Mumbai. He continues with his career in music and also cajoles her to start singing.  Just as Uma’s singing career begins  Subir starts getting jealous of her success . His ego and pride that his wife is doing much better than him tears him apart . The film reaches a sensitive part when she also loses her child in pregnancy and the couple separate and Uma goes into a depression.

Subir realses his mistake and begs for forgiveness and they with the help of family and friends reconcile once again and the film ends on a happy note when they sing together on the stage once again.
