Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan was born in Jabalpur to a Hindu Bengali Family. Her father was a writer, journalist and a stage artist. She studied in St. Joseph’s Convent School in Bhopal and used to be the head girl of her school. She was awarded the Best All India N.C.C Cadet’s Award during the Republic Day Celebrations in 1966.
On June 3rd 1973 she was married to actor Amitabh Bachchan . The couple has two children . Shweta Bachchan married to the industrialist Nikhil Nanda and she has two grandchildren, Navya Naveili and Agastya Nanda. While her Son Abhishek Bachchan also an actor is married to actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and has a daughter Aradhya Bacchan.
Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan is one of the finest Hindi film actresses of her time, known for reinforcing a naturalistic style of acting in the mainstream cinema. She made her debut as a teenager n Satyajit Ray’s film Mahanagar in 1963. Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan a student of Film and Television Institute of India started her career with this role at the age of 15 with Anil Chatterjee and Madhabi Mukerji and has also done short fims like Suman and a Bengali comedy film Dhanni Meye in 1971 with Uttam Kumar. Inspired by her experience with Satyajit Ray she joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune to learn acting and passed out with a gold Medal Later in the same year her, it was her first screen debut as an adult was for the film Guddi. Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee for whom she has done many more films . She was noted for her performance in each of her films that were distinguished, for which she won many awards during her tenure in the film industry. In this film she plays a school girl obsessed with the filmstar Dharmendra . Guddi was a success and she moved to Mumbai and soon picked u p more roles. . However hr role of a school. In her film Jawani Diwani in 1972 she has a slightly negative but glamorous role followed by her role in the film Anamika in 1973 she was recognized for the roles that credited middle class sensibilities .She acted with Directors like Gulzar, Basu Chatterjee and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Her films include Piya Ka Ghar, Uphaar , Parichay , Koshish all in the year 1972 by which time she was known to be a popular film actress and had established herself in the Industry. In Gulzar’s Koshish in 1973, Jaya Bachchan with Sanjeev Kumar played a deaf couple who struggle through their difficulties as a handicapped people. She described her role in this film as one of her best learning experiences which motivated her to take up social work. She has appeared along with her actor husband Amitabh Bachchan in Zanjeer in 1973 and Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, Mili and Sholay in 1975 Following her marriage to actor Amitabh Bachchan she quit acting and gave birth to her children. It is believed that Amitabh Bachchan restricted to her continuing in the films and she returned to act in the 1981 film Silsila and later appeared in Govind Nihlani’s Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa in 1998. Since then she appeared in a few more commercially successful films such as ‘ Fiza’ in 2000, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2001 , Kal Ho Naa Ho in 2003 which were critically acclaimed films and she won several awards and nominations again. She has also done more films with her husband Amitabh Bachchan in the films Bansi Birju in 1972, followed by B. R. Ishara’s Ek Nazar around the same year . It is said that Amitabh Bachchan had undergone a series of flops and when most of the lead heroines refused to work with him she stepped in to join him in the film Zanjeer by Salim-Javed’s script in 1973 and the film was a super hit. Bringing the pair to the limelight together. This film also gave a rise to Amitabh Bachchan’s angry young man’s image. Her daughter Shweta was born while Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan were working on the film together Sholay . Following this film she retired to raise her two children . Her last film was in 1981 opposite to her husband Amitabh Bachchan in the film Silsila.. In the last 80’s she wrote the story of the film Shahenshan in 1988 which starred Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role. After nearly 18 years away from the Industry she returned to act for the film Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa in 1998 a, film on the Naxalite movement . She appeared with her Son Abhishek Bachchan in the film Laaga Chunari Mein Daag in 2007 with Rani Mukerji also as one of the co-stars followed by Drona in 2008. In 2011, she has appeared in the Bangladeshi film Meherjaan starring Victor Banerjee and Humayun Faridi. The film was based on the Bangladesh- Pakistan love story in the backdrop of 1971 atrocities in Bangaldesh.
