With the huge success of Raazi (2018), Meghna Gulzar is on cloud nine. The film has not only won her multiple awards but the film has even broken box-office records. In nutshell, with Raazi, Meghna Gulzar has revived the magic of her father Gulzar who not made exceptional films with hardcore subjects but his films were also commercial success like Mere Apne, Aandhi, Mausam, Angoor etc. Starting her career as a screenplay writer for her father Gulzar ’s film Hu Tu Tu (1991), Meghna made her directorial debut with Filhaal (2002) and matured as an excellent director with Talvar (2015) and with Raazi she has proved she is here to stay.
The other young lady director to turn heads with her debut film English Vinglish (2012) is Gauri Shinde. The lady had the prestige of directing the super talented actress Sridevi who made her come with the film. It was a hurricane task to live up to the reputation of Sridevi but, Gauri Shinde passed the acid test with flying colours. What is worth mentioning is that she won both the Filmfare and Screen Most Promising Debut Director! In her second film, Gauri Shinde had the honour of directing King Khan aka Shah Rukh Khan and the top star Alia Bhat in Dear Zindagi (2016). Gauri is indeed a director to reckon like her brilliant husband R.Balki, the filmmaker who made Cheeni Kum and Paa with Amitabh Bachchan.
Famous as the wife of Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao is another upcoming lady director who has the potential to make it big in Bollywood. Starting her career as an assistant director with Aamir Khan in Lagaan, Kiran directed her debut film Dhobi Ghat, for Aamir Khan Production. The film won rave reviews and showed signs of a good director in the making.
Film star Aamir Khan needs applause because he is one of the few film producers who showed faith in lady filmmakers. After Kiran Rao, he introduced another lady filmmaker Anusha Rizvi. A journalist turned film director Anusha Rizvi directed Aamir Khan home production Peepli Live exposing the sensitive issue of farmer suicides and the consequent media and political exploitation! The movie won the Best First Film award at the Durban film festival and the Gollapudi Srinivas Award. It was also nominated for Oscar Awards.
Another lady film director whom Aamir Khan introduced in his home production was Talaash: The Answer Lies Within (2012). The film was directed by debutant film director Reema Katgi. The film was also written by Reema Katgi in association with Zoya Akhtar. The psychological horror-thriller starring Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles had Nawazuddin Siddiqui, playing a key role. The film was one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2012.
