Bandini is a 1963 film starring Ashok Kumar and Nutan , directed by Bimal Roy.

A film based on British Raj of the 1930’s , wherein the prison doctor Deven ( Dharmendra) meets the convicted woman Kalyani( Nutan) . She reveals to him her story and her connection with the freedom fighter.  She is serving life imprisonment for a murder.  The Prison Doctor who is a loving kind hearted Deven(Dharmendra) falls in love with her. Kalyani has a past and her story goes back into a flashback with her lover Bikash( Ashok Kumar) who leaves her in the village promising her to return and marry her,  but he doesn’t return back.  The society treats her harshly and she leaves the village and seeks an employment in the city as a caretaker of an unstable woman who happens to be the wife of her ex-lover Bikash . Upon realizing the woman is none other than Bikash’s wife, she is enraged to be cheated by Bikash and kills his wife. She confesses her crime and is sentenced to prison where she meets Deven . She finishes her jail term and is released, but the time has come for her to take her final call and a decision. As she is still in love with Bikash and  she finds him very ill and opts to take care of him with a dilemma whom to choose between the two , her former lover Bikash or the kind hearted prison doctor Deven, who cared for her and gave her a new lease in life. The story ends showing the woman is a prisoner of her own destiny which has to define her life ahead.
