Malti is a beautiful young girl full of life and aspirations. All her dreams are crushed when a jilted man takes revenge on her for rejecting him. He destroys her face by throwing battery acid on her face in broad daylight in New Delhi in the year 2005. She and her family is devastated by what the acid has done to her face. They fight tooth and nail to get her justice but Malti also struggles to come to terms with her destroyed face and the way the society starts to treat her. In the bargain she also meets a social activist and falls in love with him. The film is all about the repercussions of living as an acid attack victim in India and how the legal system deals with the issue.
The film is directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Deepika Padukone, Fox Star Studios, Govind Singh Sandhu and Meghna Gulzar. The star cast of the movie includes Vikrant Massey and Deepika Massey. The cinematography is by Malay Prakash and the music is composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The story of the film is written by Atika Chohan and Meghan Gulzar.
