Television Career (2007–2013)
Vikrant started his acting career on television with Dhoom Machaao Dhoom in 2007, portraying Aamir Hassan. In 2008, he played Dharam Veer alongside Rajat Tokas.
He gained recognition as Shyam Singh in the popular series Balika Vadhu (2009–2010), portraying a supportive husband appreciated by viewers. He then appeared in Baba Aiso Varr Dhoondo (2010–2011), taking his first lead role as Murli Laal.
In 2011, a newspaper selected him as The Next Big Thing among television actors, chosen unanimously by Rajan Shahi, Varun Badola, and J. D. Majethia.
He played a parallel lead in Qubool Hai (2013) opposite Ketki Kadam and hosted shows like Yeh Hi Aashiqui and Ajab Gajab Ghar Jamai. His last television appearance was in 2014.
Entry into Films and Web Series (2013–2023)
Vikrant made his Hindi film debut in Lootera (2013), playing the friend of Ranveer Singh’s character. In 2015, he appeared in Zoya Akhtar’s ensemble family drama Dil Dhadakne Do.
He was selective with films, and in 2017 played a lead role in Konkona Sen Sharma’s A Death in the Gunj, earning a Filmfare Critics Award nomination. That year, he also appeared in Half Girlfriend and Lipstick Under My Burkha.
Vikrant ventured into web series in 2018, appearing in Mirzapur, Broken But Beautiful, and Criminal Justice (2019), where he portrayed a transformative role as Aditya, a murder accused. He also appeared in Made in Heaven, portraying a character in Delhi’s wedding planning scene.
In 2020, he starred opposite Deepika Padukone in Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak. He also appeared in Cargo, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, and Ginny Weds Sunny.
In 2021, his films included Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi, Switchh, Haseen Dilruba (earning a Filmfare nomination), and 14 Phere. In 2023, he appeared in Gaslight and Mumbaikar.
Breakthrough with 12th Fail (2023–2025)
12th Fail, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, marked a turning point in Vikrant’s career. He portrayed Manoj Kumar Sharma, an IPS officer, overcoming extreme poverty. The film grossed over ₹66 crore worldwide and earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, which he shared with Shah Rukh Khan (Jawan). He also won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.
In 2024, Vikrant appeared in Blackout, Phir Aayi Haseen Dillruba, Sector 36, and The Sabarmati Report. He was awarded Indian Film Personality of the Year at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in November 2024.

Temporary Break from Acting (2024)
In December 2024, Vikrant announced a break from films to focus on family after the birth of his son. He cited burnout and a need for personal time to reassess his journey as an artist. After the break, he returned rejuvenated with Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyaan alongside Shanaya Kapoor.
National Award and Future Projects (2025)
Vikrant received his first National Award for 12th Fail in September 2025, sharing it with Shah Rukh Khan. He described the recognition as a career highlight and expressed gratitude toward his co-winners.
He emphasised that recognition brings responsibility rather than pressure and continues to inspire audiences through meaningful roles.
