“Dhool” (2003), directed by Dharani, is a Kollywood action family drama film. It features Vikram, Jyothika, Vivek, and Reema Sen. The film centres on a man named Arumugam who comes to the city to protest against water pollution in his village. Somehow, he got involved with corrupt politicians and rowdies and got into a fight to get justice.

Arumugam, a good man from a village is poisoned by a chemical company’s factory hidden far away from where the rich live. The villagers, led by Arumugam, his friend Eswari and her grandmother Mundakanni travel to the capital Chennai and petition the local corrupt Minister Kaalaipandi to close the factory. They follow Narayanasamy, an Indian villager, now living in Chennai. During this time, Swapna, a model enlisted by Arumugam’s boss as part of a wider effort to raise capital, starts to develop feelings for the monastic Arumugam, whose primary focus remains on his mission. During their meeting with Kaalaipandi, he promises to act on their concerns.

Sornakka and Aadhi, local goons nurtured by Kaalaipandi, muscle in on Eswari and Arumugam. After a viral fight, Arumugam severely injures Aadhi, so Sornakka and Aadhi kidnap him to make him stop. Kaalaipandi is unwilling to aid the villagers. Swapna saves Arumugam and he, in turn, devises a plan to expose Kaalaipandi’s villainous side. He forges a letter from Kaalaipandi that gets published, causing public outrage.
Sornakka attempts to counterattack but misses. Following a chain of violent encounters between the bewildered police officer Karunakaran, cultivated to seem deranged by Kaalaipandi, the mayhem continues to build. Arumugam finds out about a conspiracy to kill the CM and saves him as well as helps take down Kaalaipandi. The CM acts to close down the toxic factory, and Arumugam and the villagers rejoice.

“Dhool” is a rollicking, action-infused family drama that mashes up social concerns with riveting, bombastic fun. The movie captures Arumugam’s courageous and determined battle against corruption and pollution that has destroyed his village and way of life. Featuring dynamic performances and a gripping storyline, this work of art is a powerful reminder that the pursuit of justice and community can prevail. Directed by Dharani and starring Vikram and Jyothika, Dhool is still considered a classic mixing action, emotion, and social message in perfect proportion.
