“Ghilli” by Dharani is a sports action film. Vijay, Trisha, and Prakash Raj. A remake of the Telugu film “Okkadu” (2003). A Kabaddi player goes to Madurai to participate in an exhibition match but instead rescues a woman from a gang leader who wants to marry her.

Velu, a Kabaddi player in Chennai, often clashes with his father, a police officer, but is loved by his mother and sister. Instead of attending a wedding, Velu goes to Madurai for a kabaddi match. There, he sees Dhanalakshmi, who is being threatened by Muthupandi, a gang leader. Velu saves her, bringing her to Chennai.
Muthupandi wants to marry Dhanalakshmi and has killed her brothers. Dhanalakshmi's father wants her to escape to America. Velu hides Dhanalakshmi in his home. Muthupandi's father, a Home Minister, asks Velu's father to find Dhanalakshmi. Velu gets Dhanalakshmi a passport and a plane ticket. His father finds out, but they escape to a lighthouse.

Velu and his friends get Dhanalakshmi to the airport before his Kabaddi match. His father is angry but decides to wait until after the game to arrest him. When Velu comes across Dhanalakshmi playing at the sports meet, he begins to shine. More than that, his team wins. Only for his father to arrest him. Muthupandi arrives and wants to fight Velu to prove himself to Dhanalakshmi. Velu knocks Muthupandi out and embraces Dhanalakshmi. Muthupandi attempts to fight Velu using an electric sword but he gets electrocuted and dies on the spot.

"Ghilli" is a high-energy sports action film that seamlessly marries far-fetched but exciting Kabaddi sequences with a central, nail-biting rescue mission. Vijay is terrific as ruthless, fearless Velu, while Prakash Raj’s villainy makes it all the more mesmerizing. Director Dharani packs a vigorous narrative full of emotion, humour and action into the four-hour epic with breakneck pacing. A well-executed remake of Okkadu, Ghilli remains a fan favourite for its thrilling moments and memorable soundtrack.
