“Jigarthanda DoubleX” (2023) is an action drama set in the Tamil language by Karthik Subbaraj. A prequel to Karthik Subbaraj's 2014 film Jigarthanda, the movie is headlined by Raghava Lawrence and S. J. Suryah. The film revolves around a cop who infiltrates as a director to kill a gangster within 1970s Tamil Nadu.
“Kirubakaran”, who hopes to become a policeman, is framed for murder and sent to jail. DSP “Rathna Kumar”, who plans a secret operation to wipe out gangsters who back Minister “Karmegam”, a ruthless politician, approaches “Kiruban” and promises him liberation if he kills “Alliyus Caesar”, a notorious gangster. Kiruban chooses the name "Ray Dasan", and reaches an understanding with Caesar about making a movie of his life.
As Kiruban ingratiates himself with Caesar, he uncovers dark secrets: Caesar was the killer who ruined Kiruban's life and is a member of a targeted tribal tribe oppressed under Shettani, an elephant poacher. In a quest for revenge, Kiruban tricks Caesar into facing Shettani, and he gets caught. But the actual conspiracy is much worse, Shettani acts under the Chief Minister's cover, and the government sanctions a massacre of the tribals. Caesar, his wife Malaiyarasi, and the villagers are murdered, while Kiruban escapes narrowly with Caesar's newborn son.
Kiruban - intent on exposing the truth - shares footage of the video images of the massacre which sparks public outrage. In a final showdown, he kills Rathna, while Karmegam goes against his party.
"Jigarthanda DoubleX" connects the dots of action, politics, and film-making with a powerful story to tell.
