"Mersal" (2017) is an action thriller film in Tamil directed by Atlee, starring Vijay in three roles with S. J. Suryah, Kajal Aggarwal, and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. The movie is about two brothers: Vetri, a vigilante magician, and Maaran, a compassionate doctor, who fight against a greedy and negligent medical system.

A sequence of inexplicable kidnappings in the medical profession compels the police to apprehend Dr. Maaran. It is revealed through flashbacks that the actual mastermind is Vetri, the long-lost twin brother of Dr. Maaran. Vetri is a man bent on avenging a system that killed a young girl and her mother. The brothers are the children of Vetrimaaran, a traditional village chief who was betrayed by ill-famed doctors Daniel (S. J. Suryah) and Arjun (Hareesh Peradi) and died from the mother's childbirth. Vetri survives and learns magic, while Maaran is a good doctor. The two finally meet and interchange each other's roles to establish the truth.

Vetri abducts and punishes the corrupt persons, while Maaran goes on to heal and guard the innocent. As Daniel attempts to silence them, the brothers make a final attack: Maaran kills one of Daniel's assistants, and Vetri electrocutes Daniel after a vicious fight. Vetri is taken into custody but uses a press conference to expose the ugly truth regarding the healthcare system. Even from behind bars, he manages to escape again to keep striving for justice, and Maaran steps into the driver's seat at the Indian Medical Council with the intent of reforming from within.

"Mersal" is a mix of mass entertainment and a strong social message. Vijay delivers a gripping performance in all of the three characters, supported by an emotional backdrop, powerful music, and smartly executed action. With its scathing attack on medical corruption, the film leaves a lasting impact while captivating audiences with its drama, twists, and high energy.
