“Poovellam Un Vaasam” (2001) directed by S. Ezhil a drama film. It stars Ajith Kumar and Jyothika in the titular roles. The story of the film revolves around two childhood friends from adjacent families, Chinna and Chella, who eventually fell in love with one another. A storybook miscommunication creates tension and distance between them and their human families.
These two families have lived in these near-identical bungalows and been good friends with each other for over four decades. Their kids Chinna and Chella are great buddies who go to the same college, study together and have a very close relationship as well. Over time, they fall in love, exchanging shy glances when they think the other isn't watching.
Their college friend, Karna, schemes to separate them and win Chella’s heart, even though he doesn’t actually love her. Chinna is tricked by Karna’s false accusations against Chella and, devastated, returns to his village on a work trip. Meanwhile, Chella, encouraged by both families, stands up for her love for Chinna and insists she will marry him.
When Chinna returns home and learns an engagement is being arranged for him, he thinks Chella is marrying Karna because of family pressure and plans to back out.Chella is understandably furious over his betrayal and distrust and she, too, retreats. After a time of separation during which both families sever all ties, Chinna and Chella understand that they can’t live without each other and their respective families come back together.
A touching family drama that unflinchingly confronts unconditional love, lack of understanding, and emending alienation. The film is a beautiful exploration of the warmth to be found in intimate relationships and the damage that comes with miscommunication. Moving, energetic, and imbued with a sense of yearning, it evokes the power of faith, friendships, and community. It all plays out in a raw and unflinching manner, providing a quiet but powerful glimpse into the ways connections can be broken and mended through the years.
