“Puzhu” is a 2022 Malayalam psychological drama film directed by debutant Ratheena and scripted by Harshad, Suhas, and Sharfu. The movie features Mammootty in a dark and complicated character, with Parvathy Thiruvothu and Appunni Sasi.

The plot revolves around “Kuttan” (Mammootty), a top IPS officer and widower who resides in a luxury apartment with his small son, “Kichu.” While Kuttan thinks he's bringing up his son with discipline, his excessive control and strict attitude make life a nightmare for Kichu, who secretly longs for his father's demise. Kuttan becomes paranoid and feels that somebody is plotting to kill him. His paranoia increases when his estranged sister Bharati occupies a flat adjacent to theirs with her husband, “Kuttappan” (Appunni Sasi), a theatre person of lower caste background.

Kuttan's resentment of Kuttappan and his inter-caste prejudice gradually disintegrate his psychological stability. His past as a stern policeman, his shady business dealings, and his inability to trust anyone, even his own son, push him into extreme psychological crisis. Tension rises as Kuttan tries to control everyone in his vicinity but loses grip over reality. The movie delves into the struggle for power within a family, entrenched caste prejudice, and the haunting consequences of repressed feelings.

“Puzhu” is memorable for Mammootty's gripping performance as a man you can't quickly judge: is he a villain, a victim, or simply disturbed? His suppressed facial expressions and controlled anger keep the viewer on the edge of their seats. Parvathy again comes through with a good performance as the strong yet vulnerable sister, while Appunni Sasi makes a lasting impact in a disciplined but powerful cameo. The eerie music in the background by Jakes Bejoy enhances the atmosphere of the film throughout.

While the story moves slowly, "Puzhu" is a creepy and haunting psychological thriller. It's worth watching for individuals who like good stories and complex characters.
