Gulabji, played by Rani Mukerji works as a prostitute and is mostly seen at the RK bar. There she meets a handsome and charming singer Ranbir aka Raj, played by Ranbir Kapoor. She is besotted by him but doesn’t let him know. She lovingly calls him Saawariya. He asks her to help him get a job and a place to stay. She suggests asking an old lady called Lillian. Ranbir and Lillian instantly get emotionally attached as he reminds her of her lost son. One day Ranbir bumps into a mysterious and beautiful girl called Sakina. Raj falls in love with her at first sight.

 

Raj pursues Sakina wholeheartedly but she ignores his advances and tells him that she is in love with a man named Imaan, who has promised to return on Eid. Many Eids have passed and Imaan hasn’t returned but she waits patiently and faithfully. Raj doesn’t believe that Imaan really exists and decides to propose to Sakina next Eid. On Eid Sakina is waiting for Imaan but Raj comes and tells her that he is sure Imaan will not return. This angers Sakina who tells him to go away. She later realizes that Imaan might never return and changes her mind. Just then Imaan appears and they unite. A heartbroken Raj walks away and moves on.

 

The movie is directed and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The story is written by Prakash Kapadia and Vibhu Puri. The music is composed by Monty Sharma.
