“Sumo” is a forthcoming Tamil comedy film directed by S. P. Hosimin and produced by Ishari K. Ganesh under the banner of Vels Film International. The movie features Shiva, Priya Anand, and actual Japanese sumo wrestler Yoshinori Tashiro in important roles. Following several delays since 2019, Sumo is now set to release in theatres on 25 April 2025.
The movie starts when “Shiva” (played by Shiva), a benevolent man, finds a gigantic Japanese sumo wrestler (Yoshinori Tashiro) stranded on an Indian beach. The wrestler is dazed, doesn't know anything about his past, and behaves like a kid. Having no clue about why he is there or who he is, Shiva welcomes him and tries to help him.
Days pass, and Shiva becomes fond of the wrestler and decides to help him return to Japan and retrieve his lost identity. Theirs is a journey with humorous, emotional, and action-filled moments as they struggle through cultures and nations. The wrestler gradually begins to recall fragments of his past: his career, his honour, and the fall that led him to India.
The movie has a romantic sub-plot also featuring Shiva, Priya Anand, and Yogi Babu that adds comic entanglements to the already unusual plot. The love triangle forms some light-hearted moments that ensure the tone of the movie is entertaining and enjoyable.
“Sumo” guarantees a combination of laughter, emotional connection, and adventure. Although the plot is different in its approach with a seldom-seen cultural conflict between India and Japan, the core strength of the film lies in the heartwarming friendship of two vastly contrasting individuals. A good dose of comedy and feel-good scenes is provided by the film, with the intention to give a healthy family entertainer that touches bases with friendship, identity, and second chances.
