“Vasool Raja MBBS” (2004) is Saran’s Tamil remake of the comedy-drama “Munna Bhai MBBS.” It stars Kamal Haasan, Prabhu, Sneha, and Prakash Raj. It was adapted from the Hindi film “Munna Bhai MBBS” (2003). The movie follows a goon, Rajaraman, who gets himself admitted into a medical college to realise his father’s dream. He intimidates the other students, breaks all the college rules, and starts setting traps for Dr. Vishwanathan.

Vasool Raja, played by Rajaraman, aka “Vasool Raja,” is a local don in Chennai who extorts money to finance his father’s dream for him to be a doctor, so he sets up a sham hospital. His life changes completely when his father’s old friend, Dr. Vishwanathan, fixes his marriage to his daughter, Dr. Janaki, unveiling Raja’s true identity. Heartbroken, Raja's parents disown him, prompting him to pursue an MBBS degree to redeem himself.

He gets admitted to SLR Institute of Medical Sciences, where Vishwanathan is the dean and attempts to have him kicked out. Despite his lack of medical knowledge, Raja uses "Kattipudi Vaithiyam," or "hugging therapy," to create a caring environment, gaining Janaki's affection while frustrating Vishwanathan.

While Raja is busy helping Margabandhu’s ailing father to recuperate, he has to face all sorts of odds thrown at him by Vishwanathan, the villain. In the wake of a climactic confrontation, Raja finally confesses his identity to the college, winning the hearts of everyone there except for Vishwanathan. By a miracle, a brain-dead patient breaks through and recovers after Raja exits, allowing Vishwanathan to come to terms with his misdeeds. Raja eventually marries Janaki and wins back the affection of his parents.

In “Vasool Raja MBBS,” one of Kamal Haasan’s many blockbusters from the early 2000s, Kamal plays a gangster who enrols in medical college to fulfil his father’s dream of raising a doctor. At odds with the rigid dean, he’s a great big softy who believes in breaking the rules to heal people. Convention is no substitute for compassion. His journey ultimately leads to love, redemption, and a moving transformation that spurs others to change as well.
