"Vishwaroopam" (2013) is an action spy thriller written, co-produced and directed by Kamal Haasan, who also stars in the lead role. The movie features Kamal Haasan, Rahul Bose, Shekar Kapur, and Pooja Kumar. It's about a nuclear oncologist who suspects that her husband is concealing something, only to learn he's involved in a much larger and deadlier game of global espionage.
Set in New York, Nirupama (Pooja Kumar), a professional-minded Indian female, admits to a psychologist that she only married her husband, Vishwanath (Kamal Haasan), a Kathak instructor, for convenience. Being estranged from him and drawn towards her boss, she suspects Vishwanath of keeping secrets. She employs a private investigator to trail him, but the detective gets murdered by Farukh, a hitman of a terrorist organisation commanded by Omar (Rahul Bose) Qureshi. This results in Nirupama and Viz being abducted. In a twist, Viz kills the kidnappers and makes his escape with Nirupama. It's later discovered that his true name is Wizam Ahmad Kashmiri, who was once an undercover RAW agent in Al-Qaeda and has a history with Omar.
Wizam continues his pursuit of preventing a nuclear attack. Omar intends to blow up a dirty bomb in New York with cesium-137. Wizam returns to Omar's network, earns their confidence, and collaborates with the FBI to trace the materials. Nirupama finds out the truth about her husband's dual life and looks at him differently. In a tense operation, Wizam and the FBI apprehend Omar's group and defuse the bomb. Unfortunately, Dr. Dawkins is murdered, and Omar flees. Wizam murders Omar's close aid Abbasi and threatens Omar by phone that he is coming for him.
"Vishwaroopam" is distinguished by its tense plot, fearless characters, and international setting. Kamal Haasan excels in action and tear-jerking scenes, ably supported by grounded performances and incisive direction. The movie blends spy action with introspective themes, presenting a unique combination of brains and brawn in Indian cinema.
