Discover the unconventional directorial instructions given to Sonam Kapoor and Jim Sarbh on the set of 'Neerja,' aiming for authentic character immersion. Director Ram Madhvani's Unique Approach to Character Immersion on the 'Neerja' Set.
Sonam Kapoor and Jim Sarbh weren't allowed to interact during filming
The production of the 2016 film Neerja was distinguished by innovative directorial decisions that were distinct from typical Bollywood films. Director Ram Madhvani prioritised authenticity and emotional engagement, which resulted in unprecedented directions for the lead actors.

Sonam, playing Neerja Bhanot, was discouraged from interacting with the Pan Am Flight 73 survivors. Madhvani felt that such interactions would bring in preconceived notions, which would hamper Sonam Kapoor's performance and ability to convincingly play the role of Neerja. This was done to enable Kapoor to respond spontaneously, as Neerja responded in real life during the hijacking.
Jim Sarbh portrayed the hot-headed terrorist Khalil and thoroughly explored the depths of his character. Sarbh explained that the ferocity of his role carried over onto the set, sometimes taking on Khalil's hot-headedness. He said, 'I had started acting like him on sets. I used to sometimes yell at the assistant directors if my costume was not ready on time.'
These unorthodox directions were in line with Madhvani's larger vision of making a movie that broke free from conventional Bollywood storytelling, concentrating on authentic emotional expression and depth of character. The outcome was a movie that deeply resonated with viewers and critics alike, highlighting the potential of immersive storytelling.
