Bollywood marriage has always been the talk of the town for various reasons. May it be big lavish venues or dreamy outfits our celebs are trendsetters of all. These weddings represent our rich Indian culture which includes various rituals and customs. Some celebrities have managed to shatter a few regressive customs and rituals in their weddings. By challenging and breaking stereotypes they have encouraged progressive and modern points of view. Let's have a look at some of these beautiful and progressive wedding ceremonies.
Dia Mirza And Viabhav Rekhi:
Dia Mirza and Vaibhav Rekhi tied the knot in a very wholesome and intimate wedding ceremony which took place at Dia’s Bandra residence. The beautiful ceremony was completely sustainable which means it produced zero waste as Dia Mirza personally promotes and follows a sustainable lifestyle. Along with sustainability one of the most intriguing things about their marriage was “a woman priest!”. While talking about this unusual choice Dia Mirza shared a picture of her and her groom Viabhav Rekhi with a heartfelt caption. It read “The highest point for us was the Vedic ceremony conducted by a woman priest! I had never seen a woman performing a wedding ceremony until I attended my childhood friend Ananya’s wedding a few years ago. Ananya’s wedding gift to Vaibhav and me was to bring Sheela Atta who is her aunt and also a priestess, to perform the ceremony for us. She also painstakingly went through several hours of training to imbibe the essence of the scriptures so that she could assist Sheela Atta and translate the shlokas! It was such a privilege and a joy to be married this way!’
The Mirza Rekhi wedding also skipped rituals like Kanyadan and Bidai. Kanyadaan simply translates as “Donating Girl” This ritual is performed by the bride’s parents.
Katrina Kaif And Vicky Kaushal:
Everyone's favourite Bollywood couple got married at Rajasthan’s Fort Barwara in December 2021. The royal wedding ceremony of Katrina and Vicky was attended by close friends and family. Katrina wore an iconic red Sabyasachi lehenga for her pheras. Her bridal entry was a highlight of the ceremony as she was accompanied by her beautiful sisters who carried Phoolon ki chadar for her. Technically this custom is performed by brothers but Katrina Kaif chose to do this with her sisters. While sharing the picture of her bridal entry she wrote “Growing up, we sisters always protected each other. They are my pillars of strength and we keep each other grounded… May it always stay that way!”
Priyanka Chopra And Nick Jonas:
Bollywood’s desi girl got married to an American singer Nick Jonas in December 2018 at Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Their wedding was a beautiful blend of Indian and English wedding ceremonies. Priyanka’s mother played one of the most important parts in this ceremony. Priyanka lost her father in 2013; he was battling cancer and took his last breath at the age of 62. In Priyanka and Nick’s wedding, all the customs which was supposed to be performed by her father were done by her mother Madhu Chopra. While talking about the same Madhu Chopra said, “When she (Priyanka) told me I was supposed to walk her down the aisle and do the kanyaadan, it was the most moving thing.” She further added, “Priyanka did her first dance with Nick after marriage and then the second one she did it with me. In fact, Nick proposed that Priyanka would like to dance with you. What she would have done with her father (late Dr Ashok Chopra), she did it with me, so that was like elevating me to another level and I was very touched." Explaining how emotional the precious moment was for her, she said, “If you see all the pictures, my eyes are swollen in them.” Priyanka choosing her mother to perform all the rituals rather than letting the elder man in the family do it in the absence of her father was very emotional and inspiring for many girls.
Lucy Payton and Purab Kohli:
Rock on fame Purab Kohli got married to long-time girlfriend Lucy Payton in 2016. The couple got married after dating for several years. 2 years before they got married they had a beautiful daughter. In India having a child before marriage or without marriage is still considered a taboo. While talking about the same in the interview Purab Kohli said “We always wanted to get married, but didn’t want to rush into it. When Inaya was going to come into this world, it was a glorious moment by itself, and we didn’t want to dilute that by suddenly rushing into marriage.”
Suhasini Mulay and Atul Gurtu:
Suhasini Mulay remained unmarried till the age of 60 after partying ways with her 90’s lover. The veteran actress stayed single for almost 20 years until she found love again at the age of 60. Sushasini Mulay met physicist Atul Gurtu on Facebook. Mr. Atul Gurtu was a widower; he lost his wife to cancer after being married to her for 36 years. Suhasini Mulay married Atul Gurtu at the age of 60 and broke the stereotype that women should marry at a certain age. Their marriage set an example for many who have chosen to remain single in their older age because of the judgemental society. Suhasini Mulay and Atul Gurtu’s marriage proved marriage doesn't have the right age.
Patralekhaa Paul and Rajkummar Rao:
After a romantic journey of 11 years, actor Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa exchanged vows in a lovely and private wedding ceremony. Among the numerous photos and videos that delighted their fans, one heartfelt gesture by Rajkummar stood out. Following the application of sindoor on Patralekhaa's forehead, he lovingly asked his wife to apply sindoor on his own forehead. Traditionally, sindoor is worn by Indian women as a symbol of their devotion to their husbands. By doing this gesture Rajkummar Rao unknowingly shattered gender norms. He talked about this wholesome moment in an interview and talked about the reactions it received, “I didn’t really read all the comments but I know a lot many people picked it up and a lot of articles were being written, in a good way. People appreciated that and it was something that was very impulsive. None of us planned it.”
