Bobby, played by Vidya Balan is brought up in an orthodox middle-class family in Chaminar. She lives with her parents, two younger sisters and aunt. Bobby has always dreamt of becoming a successful private detective and experiments in solving her neighborhood small cases. She finally hits the bulls eye when an NRI Anees Khan, played by Kiran Kumar asks her to find two missing girls, Niloufer and Aamna.
Bobby manages to find the girls after taking up many transformations like astrologer, beggar, student, etc. Impressed with her talent, Khan pays her a hefty fee and also hands her another case of finding a lost boy Ali. Later her marriage is fixed with a neighborhood boy Tasawwur who is her friend but both aren’t ready for marriage. Another goon Lala, played by Arjan Bajwa gives Bobby the case of breaking his girlfriends marriage but Bobby refuses and he threatens her saying Khan’s case that she took up was unlawful and finds both the girls have gone missing again.
Bobby and Tasawwur break into Khan’s hotel room and find his diary. They get clues in the diary as to Khan’s next move. They later find out that the two girls and Ali are Khan’s lost children during the communal riots and Lala is his son Ali. Bobby is praised for solving yet another tricky case. Tasawwur and Bobby eventually fall in love.
The movie is directed by Samar Shaikh and produced by Dia Mirza, Sahil Sangha and Reliance Entertainement. The music is composed by Shantanu Moitra and Swanand Kirkire.
