“J Baby” is a Tamil drama film directed by Suresh Mari, featuring Attakathi Dinesh, Urvashi, and Lollu Sabha Maaran. The film revolves around two brothers, “Maaran and Dinesh”, who are estranged from each other. They need to go to Barrackpore to search for their missing mother, “J Baby” (Urvashi). During this trip, they have to deal with their differences and past unresolved conflicts.
The movie begins with the sudden vanishing of J Baby, and this leads to a search. In a non-linear storyline, the first half follows the tense relationship between the brothers, and the second half concentrates on the life of J Baby. The film takes the intensity of emotions in family relationships, weaving humor and drama together.
A standout is the way it is so realistic in portraying language barriers. Instead of attempting to fit Tamil dialogue into every scene, the film allows Bengali characters to speak their own language and relies on natural reactions to tell the story themselves. This makes the storytelling richer.
But J Baby falters in coherence in its storytelling. The shift between the mother's tale and the brothers' fight is not even, and it becomes more difficult to connect with the characters emotionally. The background score also overpowers some of the crucial emotional scenes at times, taking away from the performances.
In spite of these failures, Urvashi performs well, adding warmth and depth to her role. Maaran impresses too with some of the film's most well-written dialogue. Though “J Baby” has great performances and interesting moments, its fragmented telling keeps it from really working as an emotional drama.
