“Kasi” (2001) directed by Vinayan is a musical drama film. It features Vikram, Kaveri, and Kavya Madhavan in lead roles. The short movie centers around Kasi, a blind man who receives an unexpected proposal from Dinesh to pay for his eye surgery. Being a beautiful person at heart, Kaveri, his speechless girlfriend, is moved by this act and decides to donate her own eye to him.
Kasi is a blind Dalit poet and singer who supports his family through his art, living on the margins of a village in Tanjore district. He has a dysfunctional family with an older brother, Sevalai, who becomes an alcoholic, a disabled and ultimately abusive father, Valaiyapathy, and a younger sister, Lakshmi. When a previously-ousted powerful landlord, Raghupathi, gets his hands on the land and returns to the area promising assistance, the Raghupathi brings an elite eye doctor along with him. Raghupathi vows to pay for an operation to restore Kasi’s sight, but Kasi has to first arrange for an eye donor himself. His mute lover, Kaveri, volunteers one of her eyes.
Just when Kasi is about to have the operation, tragedy strikes when Lakshmi is found dead, she has killed herself from the trauma induced by Raghupathi. On the day of Raghupathi’s funeral visit, Kasi tries to confront him and he kills him by choking him to death not knowing the situation and pain that destroyed his life and family.
“Kasi” is a musical drama that packs an emotional punch with its themes of love, sacrifice and resilience intertwined on the canvas of a rural landscape. With gripping performances and a chilling score that heightens the drama unfolding on screen, the film is a taut tale of caution and consequence.
