“King” (2002) directed by Prabhu Solomon is an action romantic film. It features Vikram, Sneha and Nassar. The movie centres around Raja, a teenage boy who lives in Hong Kong with his father. When a sudden accident leaves his father in critical condition, a heartbroken Raja embarks on an emotional odyssey to reconnect him with his estranged businessman grandfather, to fulfil his father’s final wish and restore peace to his ending days.

Raja Krishnamoorthy has been living in HK with his father Shanmugam. Following a near-fatal collision, the two are brought to a hospital. There, their doctor, played by actor and filmmaker Prakash Raj, discloses that Shanmugam has multiple sclerosis and just two months to live. Raja pledges himself to make his father proud and convinces them to go back to India to rejoin their family. Family members, friends and family members are shocked to find Shanmugam, but his father is still furious with him. Raja impresses everyone with his magic and mimicry skills.

Raja eventually falls in love with Tamil, an orphan raised by the family, but Tamil turns him down, telling him that she would rather honour the customs of the family. In a tense scene, Raja attempts suicide as a means of forcing a reconciliation between Shanmugam and his estranged father. Raja starts developing health problems and finds out by phone that it is he, not his father, who is sick. Raja hides this from his father. Cheenu and his team broke the news to the children’s parents that their child would benefit from a new treatment available in Europe. Raja persuades Shanmugam to go back to Hong Kong, and while they’re leaving, Tamil admits her feelings for Raja, but he doesn’t reply.

“King” (2002) takes us beyond the scope of an action-romantic drama which deeply challenges our emotions and transports us into a refreshing spirit. Filled with themes of love, sacrifice, and the ties that bind us as a family, it’s a beautiful story inspired by the true events of a son’s quest to honour his father’s last wish. Vikram is admirable in a grounded and forthright performance as the irascible Vikram, with Sneha and Nassar providing well-judged emotional ballast. Bittersweet in tone and shot through with passion, it leaves a powerful impact as a poignant story of reunion, love, and quiet fortitude.
