Madanolsavam (1978) is a romantic drama directed by N. Sankaran Nair. Stars Kamal Haasan, Jayan, Zarina Waheb and Sankaradi. The film is about Raju, a young man from a wealthy family, and Elizabeth, a good-hearted woman from a low-income family, whose love must withstand the greatest challenge of life. Together, they learn how to sacrifice and hope as they face serious illness and the loss of someone they both love.

Raju is a young man from a rich Hindu family. He falls in love with Elizabeth, a good-hearted Christian girl from a poor family. Even though they are from very different backgrounds, they marry with the desire to share a good life. Elizabeth supported Raju during the time it took to become a good officer in government service, when things were not going so well for them. Raju worked very hard to become a good government officer and a loving husband, even when the future looked dark. On the horizon of their future, everything was "perfect" until Elizabeth became gravely ill with leukaemia. The doctors said there was little or no hope, and yet Raju was steadfast while trying for as long as possible to be there with Elizabeth, caring for her and loving her.

As Elizabeth gets worse, their love becomes deeper. They cherish every hour they spend with one another, often reminding each other about the importance of love and family. When Elizabeth passes away eventually, Raju is devastated, but finds a new strength in the memories of their time with one another. He decides to honour her by helping as many people in hardship. As an officer, he dedicates his work to helping the poor and needy people. At the end of the film, Raju learns that true love never dies, and it lives on in the goodness that we share with others and the lives we touch. The film concludes with him standing by Elizabeth's grave, promising to keep her spirit alive in his heart and actions.

Madanolsavam is a touching story that nicely encapsulates the themes of love, sacrifice and courage. The performances are sincere, but the chemistry between the leads generates real emotion on-screen. The music is complementary to the narrative, enhancing the atmosphere. This film is quite memorable in sharing how love can invoke bravery and hope in the most impossible of situations.
