“Mangalavaaram” is an Indian 2023 Telugu-language erotic psychological thriller directed by Ajay Bhupathi and produced under A Creative Works and Mudhra Media Works. It features Payal Rajput, Nandita Swetha, and Priyadarshi Pulikonda. The film takes place in the village town of Mahalakshmipuram in 1996, where a wave of mysterious suicides sweeps through the village. Every Tuesday, on the walls appear confessions of adulterous affairs of the victims in an inexplicable way, deepening the enigma.

“SI Maaya” starts investigating and finds out these are not suicides but killings. Her investigation brings her to “RMP Viswanatham”, a well-respected village healer, to whom she catches writing a confession on a wall. When she meets him, he tells her a tragic story about “Sailaja”, a lady with a hormonal imbalance and therefore a soft target for exploitations. Misled by her college professor and blamed by society, Sailaja is rejected, finally reduced to inhuman abuse by the villagers. When her body is discovered later in a well, it is ruled as a suicide.

As Maaya continues to dig deeper, Viswanatham reveals the actual truth, Sailaja was killed by a group of villagers, headed by the influential Zamindar's wife, “Rajeswari Devi”, to conceal their secrets. Angered at this injustice, Viswanatham and Ravi, Sailaja's childhood sweetheart, take their revenge. Ravi, who had pretended to die to flee a violent life, returns as a graveyard custodian and systematically kills the six perpetrators of Sailaja's assassination. “Prakasam Babu”, the Zamindar, meanwhile murders his wife after learning of her infidelity but stages her death as a divine sacrifice to preserve his family's honor.

The movie creates suspense through its intricate narrative, weaved together through psychological trauma, revenge, and the supernatural. While “Mangalavaaram” unfolds as a tight mystery, its complicated narrative and dark themes could prove off-putting for some viewers. The dark moods and severe scenes lingered with me long after the film was over, and it remained an interesting yet disturbing experience.
