"Moondru Mugam" is an action film directed by A. Jagannathan released in 1982. It starred Rajinikanth in a triple role and featured Radhika, Sathyaraj and Senthamarai. The film is about a policeman who, before he dies at the hands of a criminal, promises to take revenge and return through reincarnation. Soon after, the stage is set by destiny and the twin sons, separated at birth, are drawn together unknowingly by destiny to fulfill his promise and face past life retributions.

Arun, son of millionaire businessman Ramanathan, comes back to India as a saint after spending nearly 10 years in the United States and is visited by Ramanathan's request asking Rekha, a press reporter, to assist him in changing back to saardinary Arun. Arun interrupts the interview, purposely contriving a car breakdown, and is accused of being a child-kidnapper by Rekha. Rekha breakly cuts off Arun's beard and Arun renounces his saints of being. Arun starts to wonder why his father's been sending money to a woman called Sagaya Maryfor over 20 years.

Sagaya Mary learns that someone has proposed to her nephew, John, and shares the story of his brother, Alex Pandian. Alex's past is revealed when he is stabbed by local mob boss Egambaram, who kills him. Arun's wife dies, and Ramanathan raises one of Alex's sons as Arun. Arun experiences a divine epiphany, realizing he is the reincarnation of Alex. He meets Asha, but it turns out to be a trap. Arun kills his attacker and is arrested. Later, a man claiming to be Alex Pandian appears, revealing that he had been in Sri Lanka all along. Arun confesses to the police that he fabricated the story to lure killers out. John learns the truth about Alex Pandian and Arun, confronts Egambaram, but is mortally wounded. At the end, Arun and Rekha now married, paying respects at John’s grave.
