“Nishabdham” (2020), directed by Hemant Madhukat, is a Telugu mystery thriller film featuring Anushka Shetty, R. Madhavan, and Michael Madsen. Initially thought out to be a silent film, it was subsequently dubbed into Tamil as Silent. The plot, set in Seattle, intertwines mystery, betrayal, and revenge.

In 1972, a couple is brutally killed in a villa, the male victim crucified. Because of the horrific event, the villa stays unsold for decades until it is bought in 2019. Sakshi (Anushka), a deaf-mute painter, and her fiancé, celebrated cellist Anthony Gonsalves (Madhavan), go to the villa to discover a valuable painting. On their visit, Anthony is killed, and Sakshi flees, covered in blood and traumatized, only to be struck by a passing car.

Detectives Mahalakshmi (Anjali) and Richard Dawkins (Michael) are assigned to the case. Sakshi describes seeing Anthony crucified but not noticing the killer. With the tensions rising from a string of missing girls in Seattle, Mahalakshmi goes further suspecting connections between Anthony and the missing girls. Sakshi finally opens up with her missing best friend, Sonali, and her terrible relationship with Anthony. Flashbacks show the troubled past of Anthony, revealing his aggression towards women and the way he abused them.

It is revealed that Sakshi and Vivek, a common friend, discovered Anthony's true identity and hatched a plan to kill him, punishing him for Sonali and other victims. Before they get close to laying out deeper corruption, it is discovered that Richard had ulterior motives and attempted to silence them. In a final showdown Mahalakshmi kills Richard, exposing the truth. The movie concludes with Sakshi and Vivek paying respects at the grave of Sonali, now in peace.

"Nishabdham" endeavours to serve up an interesting mystery but frequently fails with inconsistent pacing and telegraphed turns. Though Anushka Shetty gives a genuine performance, the movie is unable to sustain a level of suspense and hence becomes a visually stunning but emotionally remote thriller.
