“Red” (2002) is an action film by Singampuli. It stars Ajith Kumar and Priya Gill. The movie follows Red, a terrifying juggernaut of local crime whose terrifying reputation is only matched by the purity of his motives, as he determines to reeducate kids by shaping their minds and bodies. In addition to battling outside enemies and the forces of social injustice, our hero must fight to covertly protect the beautiful girl he loves, and win her heart, all while trying to escape a life of violence.
Orphan-turned-gangster Aathi, who fights under the name RED (Revolution, Education and Development), is a tiger of a man with a face tattoo and a reputation for brutal ferocity in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. RED’s violent tendencies are tempered by great depths of Justice and Compassion. He uses his strength and influence not to benefit himself, but to battle social inequalities, making it possible for schools to take students without requiring payment of bribes and donations, and spending his life in the service of orphans. For every righteous deed, his idealism catches the attention of Srini, a cutthroat competitor who ultimately becomes RED’s most formidable foe.
In the midst of all this, RED falls in love with Gayathri, the daughter of his most loyal henchman Narayanan. Even as he discreetly champions her behind the scenes, Gayathri can feel his largeness of spirit and begins to develop affection for him. At the same time, she hopes for him to leave his life of crime behind. At the same time, journalist Manimegalai starts writing a serialized story of RED’s life in Ananda Vikatan under his birth name, Aathi. From the first, Sandler’s story grabs the reader’s attention and uncovers the many layers that make up his frustratingly brilliant, complicated character. As Gayathri nudges him deeper into transformation and Manimegalai awakes the public’s affection, Aathi is forced to grapple with who he is, what he believes in, and whether forgiveness and redemption are even options.
“Red” is a social change with individual change. Against a backdrop of criminal conspiracies and gaming industry rivalries, as Dave tackles intense moral dilemmas, this character-driven narrative touches on themes of redemption, love, and justice while still hitting you with that streetwise humour. Through its juxtaposition of high emotional stakes and visceral, violent spectacle, the film gives us a clear, motivational, character-driven crusader tale.
