“Sillunu Oru Kaadhal” is a 2006 romantic drama about destiny, directed by the critically acclaimed Indian director, Krishna, starring popular Indian actors Suriya, Jyothika and Bhoomika. The movie revolves around Kundavi, a village belle wed to Goutham, who comes to know of his former love when he goes on a trip to New York, challenging their companionship and sentiments.

Kundavi, who comes from the small town of Ambasamudram and hopes to have a love marriage, is forced into an arranged marriage with Goutham. Six years later, they’re flourishing in Mumbai, raising their five-year-old daughter Ishu. While Goutham is an engineer, Kundavi is employed at a call centre. As Goutham embarks on a business trip to New York, Kundavi stumbles across Goutham’s old college diary. Most importantly, it reveals Goutham’s overwhelming passion for Ishwarya, a politician’s daughter from Coimbatore, with whom he had arranged to marry. Their love story comes to a brutal end when Ishwarya’s father and his men brutally attack Goutham, leading to Ishwarya migrating to Australia. In order to honour his uncle’s dying wish, Goutham agrees to marry Kundavi.

Once Goutham comes home, Kundavi finds herself estranged and growing aware of his one-time lover. She tracks down Ishwarya, who has transformed into a new-age woman, and baits her to meet Goutham. Kundavi convinces Ishwarya to spend one day with Goutham, in which they recreate the past moments and fall back in love with each other. Sadly, this is Kundavi’s dream. When Kundavi finally confronts Goutham, she discovers a letter from Ishwarya expressing her understanding of Goutham’s love for Kundavi and congratulating them both. Ishwarya departs and is not seen again. It is only then that Goutham confesses that he buried his erstwhile love to spare Kundavi’s feelings, and the two find each other again in a passionate hug, renewed and untethered.

A true heart-stealer, “Sillunu Oru Kaadhal” ranks among the very best of romantic dramas that delve deeply into passion, intertwining faith, betrayal, and sacrifice. Add to this the pitch-perfect performances of Suriya and Jyothika that provide warmth and realism to their characters, and you have a story with emotional heft and lively moments that should hold anyone’s interest.
