"Soorarai Pottru" (2020), a Tamil-language drama film directed by Sudha Kongara, is based on the life of Captain G. R. Gopinath, the founder of Simplifly Deccan. Featuring Suriya and Aparna Balamurali in central roles, the movie tells the motivational story of a man who pursues an exceptional dream.
Nedumaaran Rajangam, or "Maara" (Suriya) to his friends, hails from a poor village and has the ambitious dream to start a low-fare airline so that the common man may also fly. A former Indian Air Force pilot, Maara is spurred by a personal tragedy and determination since he could not attend his father's funeral because of the airfare. He encounters Sundari "Bommi" (Aparna), a lady with ambitions to set up a bakery of her own. They respect each other's aspirations and finally get married, reconciling love and ambitions.
Maara encounters numerous obstacles: denied loans, relentless humiliation, and rejection by big corporate houses such as Paresh Goswami, the proprietor of Jaz Airlines, who considers Maara's low-fare airline concept as a threat. In spite of betrayals and structural sabotage, such as a law enacted against him and active attempts at crashing his plans, Maara never gives up. With the encouragement of Bommi, his village, and a few faithful friends, Maara raises money and reclaims an abandoned airstrip to start Deccan Air. Even as Paresh makes an attempt at sabotage during the first flight, Maara's determination prevails. In defying circumstances, Deccan Air makes a successful takeoff that changes Indian flying by demonstrating that flying can be made available to every single individual.
"Soorarai Pottru" takes to the skies like an underdog story of optimism, loaded with emotion alongside great storytelling. Career-best Suriya and director Sudha Kongara infusing the essence of entrepreneurship against social and system impediments bring out the movie of the time with first-class acting, true-storytelling and uplifting plots bringing a smile onto the face as well as moved emotionally.
