The movie depicts the life of a young assistant director, Appukutty, who aspires to become a big name in the film industry while portraying a strong story of love, caste, and ambition.
Appukutty is offered his dream opportunity when he is approached by Madurai-based producer Santhana Bharathi to narrate his script. His plot is about “Sooriya”, a hot-blooded young boy, who gets smitten by “Sooriyandhi”, the shoemaker's daughter. Their affair is put to test due to caste differences.
While the lovers are finding it difficult to live together, fanatics of the caste play upon the situation to further their own interests, utilizing social differences for power and dominance. Meanwhile, two unknown men, Karpu and Ayyanar, find themselves inserted into Suryan's life after discovering his lost cell phone. These two from different walks of life share similarities in their strong belief in love and equality. They choose to help Sooriya and Sooriyagandhi and go to any lengths to reunite them at the cost of the forces of caste domination.
The question one is left wondering about in this story is: Will Sooriya and Sooriyagandhi bridge the caste gap and unite? Will Ayyanar and Karpu triumph? And most importantly, will Appukutty's age-old ambition to be a director finally see fruition with this socially conscious movie?
With its soulful narration, “Sooriyanum Sooriyagandhiyum” becomes part of the life of how caste discrimination has been breaking lives and splitting communities. With effortless and charming performances from the movie's lead cast, Appukutty, Sri Hari, AL Raja, and Vikram Sundari, the entire story seems very natural and makes the movie a captivating commentary on love, wishes, and harsh realities of caste discrimination.
