"Thalaivii" (2021) is a Tamil biographical drama film by A. L. Vijay, starring Kangana Ranaut as J. Jayalalithaa, with Arvind Swamy, Nassar, and Samuthirakani. Directed based on the novel Thalaivii written by Ajayan Bala, the film portrays the extraordinary life of Jayalalithaa from a teen actress to one of the most powerful political leaders of Tamil Nadu.

The film starts in 1989 when Jayalalithaa (Kangana), then a member of the Legislative Assembly and also a member of the AIADMK party, dares to challenge the DMK government on corruption charges. Her confrontation leads to a blistering outburst in the Assembly, leaving her embarrassed in public and re-igniting her resolve to return to the House once more as Chief Minister, an event which sets off universal public sympathy and revamps her political image.

Flashback to the 1960s, and the film explores Jaya's early days in films. Pressured into acting by her ambitious mother, Jaya meets M. G. Ramachandran (MGR), the biggest icon of Tamil cinema. Their on-screen chemistry turns to personal intimacy, but Jaya learns the price of emotional costs in being set aside in MGR's personal and professional life, especially while he transitions from cinema to politics. In spite of all this, she discovers her voice and starts asserting control over her life.

When MGR rises politically, Jaya is his loyal follower, taking up social causes such as education for children. When MGR passes away, she encounters betrayal and opposition from within the party but will not yield. With determination and people's support, she finally reaches the top, becoming Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister and transforming the face of politics.

"Thalaivii" brings to the fore the emotional depth and political determination of Jayalalithaa's struggle, her strength and resilience, and her transformation. With lifetime performances by Kangana Ranaut and Arvind Swamy, the film presents a riveting tribute to a woman who fought against odds to become a legend in cinema and politics.
