"Thanga Magan" is a 1983 action flick, directed by A. Jagannathan. It stars Rajinikanth, Poornima Jayaram, Jaishankar and Thengai Srinivasan. The movie traces Arun, who comes back to India to live with his parents. His life takes a shocking twist when a stranger tries to assassinate him. Arun is even more shocked to find his own father defending the assailant, which causes him to dig up a secret from his and his family’s past.
Arun is the bratty, impulsive son of millionaire parents, Chidambaram and Annapoorani. He frequently quarrels with Chitra, a fiery hotel dancer, but their continual bickering soon transforms into passion. One night, Kali, a hitman, breaks into Arun’s home to kill him. To Arun’s shock, his father, Chidambaram, identifies Kali and releases him. When asked, Chidambaram admits that Arun is not his real son. Years ago, they were instructed by Arun’s actual father to kill Arun and his mother. Chidambaram, stricken by pity, rescued the baby and brought him up as his son. Arun soon discovers that his real mother is Laxmi, a quiet woman staying in Chitra’s house.
Laxmi subsequently confesses the truth: that she had been duped into perjuring herself in court to shield her gangster spouse Velliangiri and his accomplice Rajalingam. They subsequently attempted to murder her to conceal their crimes. And when they discover Laxmi is alive, they meant to kill her and Arun. Laxmi is arrested when her perjured court testimony resurfaces, and Chidambaram absconds with her from jail to safeguard Annapoorani, who is similarly imperilled. Velliangiri has kidnapped Laxmi. Arun dressed like Reddy Garu sneaks in and informs the cops. In a climactic confrontation, Arun battles to protect his mother and bring Velliangiri and Rajalingam to justice. The tale concludes with justice prevailing, and Arun is reunited with his real mother, at last.
“Thanga Magan” mixes heart-warming moments with edge-of-the-seat thrills. Atop a landscape of suspense and betrayal, this movie explores identity, family secrets, and redemption. With expertly timed storytelling and compelling performances, it holds your attention the entire time. Emotional confrontations and twists and turns keep the story moving, while the action and dramatic tension deliver the punch. A great showman with soul and spirit.
