Pa. Ranjith directed the historical fantasy drama Thangalaan (2024). It stars Vikram in five roles, along with Pasupathy, Malavika Mohanan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, and Daniel Caltagirone. The movie is about Thangalaan, a well-respected village chief who goes on a dangerous quest to get back his community's stolen land, and hidden gold. He has to deal with supernatural forces and colonial powers along the way. He and his family and the people of the village fight the spirit of Aarathi, the ancient guardian of the land, to protect their past and their future.

Thangalaan was a respected village chief in Veppur in 1850. He lives with his wife, Gengamma and their kids. He shares tales with his children about Aarathi, a powerful Nagar woman who once defended their territory. Thangalaan's great-grandfather, Kaadaiyan, once helped a king look for gold, but Aarathi's magic and fierce protection led to a fight that turned the land's sand into gold. Later, the zamindar's men burn Thangalaan's crops, which makes him go into debt bondage because he loses his land. Thangalaan and the villagers go looking for gold when British officer Lord Clement arrives.

They continue in spite of threats like snakes, storms and Aarathi visions. They start mining after finding an ancient statue, but all they find is fake gold. Aarathi's spirit appears to warn them after Thangalaan's daughter is bitten by a snake. As things get worse between the British and the villagers, Aarathi tells Thangalaan about his past lives as a protector of the land's wealth. She lets him take gold only if it will help his community. Thangalaan kills Clement in anger over the British attacks and says that the land and its gold belong to the villagers. Thangalaan finally finds real gold and tells his people to protect their home from new invaders.

Thangalaan is a strong movie that mixes history and myth with real human feelings. It shows how strong and determined a community is when they are fighting to get back their dignity and heritage against all odds. The performances are very connected to the characters' struggles, and the film's immersive world makes you feel their pain, hopes and strong will. It reminds us how strong we can be when we work together and fight for what's right.
