Directed by K.R. Jaya “Uyirile Kalanthathu” is a Tamil cinema romantic musical, with Suriya, Jyothika and Raghuvaran. Most importantly, the film explores the theme of extreme sibling rivalry, as Raghu’s severe jealousy compels him to destroy his younger brother Surya’s life, reaching a horrific peak when he pushes Surya off a cliff.

Suriya is a bright, optimistic, apple of his father Sethu Vinayagam’s eye, and the pride of his family’s medical establishment. His elder brother Raghuram, now a successful district collector, has nursed a lifelong vendetta against Suriya. This spite accumulated from envy since Raghuram would constantly attempt to embarrass Suriya. Suriya is unsuspecting of his brother’s malice, which stays hidden from their parents.

When Raghuram learns that Suriya is seeing Priya, a girl whom he was courting for an arranged marriage, he seeks to end their relationship by reaching out to Priya’s brother, also a local gangster. To Suriya and Priya’s surprise, the thug not only doesn’t hurt Suriya but instead helps him. Annoyed by the situation, Raghuram takes things into his own hands and throws Suriya off a cliff, making his family think he’s dead. In one of the film’s biggest surprises, Suriya suddenly returns about halfway into a courtroom sequence and begins to detail what transpired. His return home makes his family, Priya, and everyone else happy, while Raghuram is sent to a facility for his mental health, allowing Suriya to move forward.

“Uyirile Kalanthathu” throws much more of its dramatic weight to show us the deeper, sinister colours of family ties, envy, and grace. Told with a narrative that slowly amps up the tension, the film beautifully exhibits the precociousness of trust in a family. Emotional beats are perfectly matched by an equal and opposite suspenseful turn that will have your audience on the edge of their seats while still caring deeply about the outcome. It’s a riveting film that stretches the boundaries of competition and provides hope with its healing message of compassion and empathy.
