“Varalaru” is a Tamil action film directed by K. S. Ravikumar, featuring Ajith Kumar in triple roles as a father and his two sons, with Asin, Kanika, and Ramesh Khanna in supporting roles. The plot follows Shivashankar, a rich, wheelchair-bound cantankerous patriarch, and the tangled web of lies and deception that exists between his two sons, Vishnu and Jeeva, serving as a prison for them and their family drama.

Shivashankar, played by Prakash Raj in his career-defining role of an angry man with a heart of gold, wants to teach his pampered son Vishnu Rule No. Vishnu and his pals are hoodwinked by a local pizza shop owner into thinking their village is overrun with hookers. Don’t worry, Divya and her friends are on hand to spread health awareness and teach Vishnu a lesson by injecting him and his friends with a serum that makes them itch. Vishnu succeeds in wooing Divya for himself, and they become engaged. Tension builds when Vishnu, following a night of drinking, attempts to rape Divya’s cousin and comes to blows with Divya’s family. It is only later revealed that Vishnu’s violent actions were in fact performed by his twin brother Jeeva, who holds a grudge against Shivashankar for leaving him and their mother, Gayathri, behind.

At Vishnu and Divya’s wedding, Jeeva exposes Shivashankar by threatening to expose him, revealing that he is in fact the other son. In a horrific and stunning climax, Shivashankar is killed while attempting to shield his sons from a police execution. The finale has Vishnu, in his true form, putting on the guise of Jeeva to soothe their mother’s troubled spirit, presenting a series dynamic between the brothers that is both conflicted and turbulent.

While the film is most remembered for the transformation of Ajith Kumar and the sublime manner in which he executes the triple role with emotional gravitas, the film equally delivers a daring heist storyline. The movie does a fantastic job intermixing action, drama, and family film, creating tension and excitement that keeps the audience on their toes. “Varalaru” delivers the perfect blend of action and emotion that masala cinema enthusiasts crave.
