Vetri Vizha

Vettri Vizhaa is a 1989 action film. Stars Kamal Haasan, Prabhu, Sasikala and Khushbu. The new movie, which stars Jason Sudeikis, tells the story of a man who begins to suffer from amnesia after a traumatic accident leaves him mentally scarred. When sudden flashes from his forgotten past start to expose amazing combat skills, he goes on a quest to find out who he is and what amazing things are buried in his lost memories.

Surrounded by angry henchmen and suffering from amnesia, Vetri, the titular hero, is on the run but is saved by the kickass Shirley. He realises he has flashes of sculpture and a karate class, making him think he must be trained in martial arts. Froggy, with his family, resolves to leave Madras to search for his own identity and finds a home in a wedding band with Vijay and Jaya. He soon discovers that just as Vetrivel, an undercover IPS officer, did, he had collaborated with the DIG to take down the infamous hit man Zinda. They want to set Vetri up with a sting operation and turn him into a larger-calibre hit man. Vetri’s mission leads him to discover that Zinda has hired assassins to kill a beloved priest, Baba Appaji, and he stops their plan.

To take revenge for this, Zinda abducts the wives of both Vijay and Vetri and shoots photos of the abduction. Vetri and Vijay save their wives and apprehend Zinda. When Zinda’s trial starts, they’re shocked to find that a stranger is being paraded around in Zinda’s place. After asking a few strategic questions, they finally meet the actual spy, the DIG’s wife, who tries to bribe them with money to set her free. Vijay shoots and almost kills Vetri for the cash, but she survives. Vetri and Vijay chase her down to a ship moored in the harbour and arrest Zinda.

Vettri Vizhaa is one of the intense action thrillers, gracefully fusing edge-of-the-seat martial arts action with the poignant quest of self-discovery to achieve greatness. Between the film’s tight screenplay and well-choreographed stunts, the thrills never let up from beginning to end. Balancing thrills, drama, and a poignant emotional current, it’s an exhilarating true-life tale well told on the big screen. Rarely has a picture combining such a commanding narrative with striking performances been so completely dismissed by the Academy. That’s exactly what made Michôd’s action film one of the best of its decade.
