The series is set in the era of pre-independence the series contains the Indian freedom struggle of the 1940s. Heeramandi will unfold the story of courtesans from the 'red-light district of Lahore.' The series revolves around the lives of these courtesans and their patron; it will explore the drama, love, betrayal, succession and politics in Kothas.

Addresing the history of Heeramandi it simply translates as Diamond Market in English. It is a neighbourhood and market located in the old city of Lahore. The Heera Mandi was previously known as 'Shahi Mohallah' during the 17's. The Sikh king Ranjit Singh later renamed the place 'Heera Mandi' after the name of an officer Heera Singh. Some theories also believe that it was named Heera Mandi because of the beautiful prostitutes living there who were precious like diamonds.
