Desperate for attention, Mamta Kulkarni made her debut in Tamil film Mamta Kulkarni was just 19 year old but she was hungry for fame and glamour hence when she could not get a break in Bollywood she signed popular South filmmaker Shoba Chandrasekar’s Tamil film Nanbargal (1991). It was a romantic film and a hit. After this she was noticed by both Bollywood and South film industry. She signed many films like Mera Dil Tere Liye, Ashaant but both films failed. Her other 2 Telugu films Donga Police and Premasikharam also failed bringing her much frustration. Frustrated she did a cameo in Bollywood’d top filmmaker Mehul Kumar’s Tirangaa staring legendary actor Raaj Kumar and new sensation Nana Patekar. Mamta Kulkarni played a glamour doll in the film. Hence though the film was hit, Mamta Kulkarni did not achieve much advantage from the film. Irked by failure Mamta Kulkarni did the bold topless shot and won stardom Mamta Kulkarni was crazy for stardom since her younger age hence when stardom eluded her she took the bold decision of doing the topless photo shot for Mumbai’s best seller film magazine Stardust and became talk of the town. Film producers began queuing outside her door and Mamta signed films with top stars. Suddenly destiny smiled on her and her film Aashiq Awara, the launch pad of actress Sharmila Tagore and cricket legend Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s son Saif Ali Khan, became a super-hit. To add icing on the cake Mamta Kulkarni won the prestigious Filmfare’s New Face of the Year Award. Thereafter Mamta Kulkarni was flooded with offers and worked with almost all the top stars of Bollywood from present day sensation like Aamir Khan (Baazi), Salman Khan (Karan Arjun), Sanjay Dutt (Andolan), Akshay Kumar (Waqt Hamara Hai), Govinda (Naseeb), Rahul Roy (Bhookamp) etc. Mamta Kulkarni also had the privilege of working with top Bollywood veteran actors like thespian Dilip Kumar (Qila), Dev Anand (Censor), Dharmendra (Policewala Gunda), Raaj Kumar (Tirangaa), Jeetendra (Bhookamp) Nana Patekar (Krantiveer) Mithun Chakraborty (Ahankaar), Om Puri (China Gate), etc.

Mamta Kulkarni became sensational with her semi nude photo shot Mamta Kulkarni would have been a non –celebrity had she not done the controversial semi-nude photo shot for Stardust magazine. This sizzling and sensuous cover became a hot selling property and the Rs 20 copy of Stardust was black marketed and sold at whopping Rs 100/- in 1993! Besides black marketing of the issue, Mamta Kulkarni hit media headlines as some women organization removed protest morcha for her indecent pose. She was also charged in a case of obscenity! All these controversies proved a saucy publicity and won Mamta Kulkarni the title of Hindi cinema’s top sex siren.
