Mahie Gill

Mahie Gill worked in Punjabi and Hindi films. She is best known for her role as Paro in Anurag Kashyap’s critically acclaimed movie, Dev D. It was a modern take on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Bengali novel Devdas for which she had won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress in 2010. However, Mahie had started her career in the film industry starting with Punjabi films before she made her Bollywood debut with Dev D. She subsequently gained further recognition for portraying the role of Madhavi Devi, a sexually frustrated wife in the film Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster. She was also a part of its sequel.

Mahie Gill’s first break in films

Mahie had got her first break in Punjabi based Bollywood film Hawayein and there after she did a couple of Punjabi films alongside theatre as well. Anurag Kashyap had seen her at a party and instantly finalized her to play the role of Paro in Dev D.

She had debuted on the television too with the series, Khoya Khoya Chaand in the year 2007 before she acted in the film Dev D 

She also worked in Ram Gopal Verma’s Not a Love Story which was based on the Niraj Grover murder case of 2008. Later she got an opportunity to work in Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster opposite Jimmy Sheirgill and Randeep Hooda. The film was first released on 30th September 2011. The film had earned a nomination as Best Actress at Filmfare Awards.

Mahie Gill then had appeared in Paan Singh Tomar with Irrfan Khan. A true story of an athlete who became a dacoit. In the film she essayed the character of his wife.

Gill besides Punjabi and Hindi films also made her debut in Telugu film Toofan with Apoorva Lakhia and the film was simultaneously shot in Hindi version called Zanjeer.

Mahie has also done her first item number in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s movie, Bullett Raja. 

Gill has worked in films such as Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap with a multistar cast such as legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj to name a few. 

She has also worked in 1962:The War in the Hills as Mrs. Shagun Singh.

She is also known for her versatile performances in web series such as Apaharan, Your Honor and in Punjabi cinemas. She has balanced her mainstream hits with critically acclaimed roles.

Mahie expanded her talent on to OTT platforms

Mahie Gill further expanded into OTT platforms with series like Fixerr . She successfully had transitioned from Punjabi cinemas to Hindi films which also gave her an opportunity as a strong female lead in a character role.

Her most notable include Gulaal, Paan Singh Tomar, Dabangg and the her role in Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster trilogy.

She has won the Filmfare Award, Screen and IIFA for her performance particularly for her role in Dev D and Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns.

Mahie Gill’s most recent is the web series, 1962:The War in the Hills which was directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. The series had Abhay Deol Akash Thosar and Sumeet Vyas too.
