Oor Kavalan is a 1987 action film by Manobala. It stars Rajinikanth, Radhika, Pandiyan and Raghuvaran. The film tracks the quest of Kangeyan, an oppressed villager determined to bring the persecutors of his brother to justice after his murder. While he fights the tide of deception and magic, all of India roots for him to win justice and defend his family’s honour.

Kangeyan, a good-hearted subaltern who becomes hell-bent on avenging the killing of his brother Manickam. Manickam discovers his lifelong love for the beautiful Mallika, daughter of the wealthy landowner Pannaiyar. Though her marriage is set in stone with Durai, Mallika defies all norms at the time and articulates her love for Manickam with conviction. Under Kangeyan’s guidance, the two lovers secretly marry each other in the village, allowing them to reconcile. That’s where the trouble starts when an outcast village priest who poses as having supernatural powers stirs up the villagers’ superstitious nature to create havoc. Under the influence of Durai and the priest, the villagers soon turn on Manickam, ultimately provoking his brutal assassination.

In light of Manickam’s death, Kangeyan is not keen on Mallika becoming a widow due to her husband’s brutal murder. Hoping to provide her with a good life, he arranges for her marriage to Pandiyan, a gentle cart-puller and her childhood sweetheart. Durai meddles once more, attempting to prevent the new marriage by calling on superstition to subjugate the villagers. As Kangeyan starts to piece together the truth, he discovers that the priest has deceived him and further that Durai has caused his brother’s death. Kangeyan ultimately gets the best of them both. Although he criminalises the deadly truth, Durai loses Mallika for good. Kangeyan brings back peace and justice to the village.

Oor Kavalan provides a culturally rich emotional punch with suspenseful rural action. Focusing on themes of justice versus honour and the perils of unquestioning faith, the film takes a hard look at complicity and moral responsibility. Through complex character progression and a deep story path, it brings viewers in through deep emotional turns and heart-racing encounters, never letting go. Its uplifting message and surprisingly powerful ending resonate long after the film has ended, ensuring it a place as a memorable experience among the greatest classic films of Tamil cinema.
