Anubhav Sinha’s Assi, Taapsee Pannu starrer Assi was released on Friday. The courtroom drama has not managed to beat the opening collections of Suparn Verma’s courtroom drama Haq which had hit the screens last year. The film Assi touches upon the topic of sexual assault started on a slow opening. Starring alongside Taapsee Pannu is Kani Kusruti where Taapsee plays a lawyer in the Anubhav Sinha film.


With Yami Gautam starrer Haq opening at Rs. 1.75 crore, in comparison, Assi had a start with the 0.95 crore only in net India.  The makers expect it to rise over the weekend. However, the reviews of the film have been mixed with the sensitive topic of woman exploitation in India.

Assi, apart from Taapsee Pannu, Revathy, Kani Kusruti, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub are also the star cast for the film directed by Anubhav Sinha and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar and Anubhav Sinha under the banners of Benaras Mediaworks and T.Series Films. Assi would be Taapsee Pannu and Anubhav Sinha’s third installment together following Thappad and Mulk


Assi is about the 80 rape cases in the country that were filed by the police per day with many going unreported. The film brings out the shocking revelation on the number of rape cases, few that are also hidden on a daily basis but the number itself is alarming and it is believed that every 18 to 20 minutes a woman is exploited. 


Anubhav Sinha revealed that he went through an inner conflict while making this film and a turmoil as what can one do ? Are the police doing anything about it. He said the problem is something else and it is easy to blame the police and the judiciary. The film is written with an inner feeling, an antardwand said the director.
