"Danny" (2020), directed by Santhanamoorthy, is an action thriller in Tamil based on Varalaxmi Sarathkumar in the central role of Inspector Kunthavai, a spirited committed police officer who aligns herself with a trained police dog Danny to solve a complex murder mystery.

The narrative begins as Inspector Kunthavai is assigned a challenging case of murder of a woman by brutal killing. As she begins to investigate, she discovers links to the victim's murder and a string of other murders. In realizing the intricacy of the case, she hires the services of Danny, a police dog trained, and his handler. They pick up traces of the involvement of a merciless gang that has been responsible for a string of murders across the city.

Tragedy strikes when Danny's handler is killed under suspicious circumstances, imparting an air of urgency to the investigation. Kunthavai, motivated by personal tragedy when her sister Mathi is brutally murdered in a surprise attack, throws herself heart and soul into cracking the case. Piecing together the evidence, she finds herself contending with an interlocking system of crime involving drug dealers, corrupt officials, and serial killers.

Accompanied by Danny, Kunthavai makes use of her sharp instincts and resolve to pursue the gang members individually. The climax of the investigation has Kunthavai finally standing in front of the brains behind the murders, justifying the victims. The film ends with Danny being rewarded with courage, while Kunthavai reminisces about what she has lost personally by fulfilling her responsibility.

"Danny" tries to combine a murder thriller with an emotional police procedural, but it doesn't work due to bad writing and disjointed narration. Scenes regularly break off in a way that is not logical, there is poor development of characters, and vital scenes don't make any impact. With an honest effort from Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, the film is unable to create suspense or emotional engagement and turns out to be a forgetful and monotonous thriller.
