Devaki, is the story of two young women who have ostracized by their own families and left to fend for themselves in this cruel and skin hungry male dominated world. The first woman is Devaki, played by Suman Ranganathan, who has been forced into marrying a 70 years old man by her family. He is lecherous and impotent and not able to consummate the marriage. That’s when his younger brother comes and rapes Devaki, as a part of the belief that men have to dominate women physically. A devastated Devaki then confides her misery to a low-caste boy and they start to fall in love. But she is caught in the act of adultery with him and taken to the Panchayat head and as a punishment sold off to another old man for money, which is given to her husband.

 

Nandini, played by Perizaad Zorabian works as an activist with a NGO. She later goes to the city to find another job. Meanwhile she is shocked that her lover has been physically and economically using her for his own selfish needs. To make matters worse she soon learns that he is also mistreating his pregnant wife. She feels guilty and ashamed and ends the illicit affair with the married man. She then joins an ad agency, which to her horror is owned by her estranged father. Her father left her mother years ago and she ends up in a mental asylum, while he has no memory of his daughter. Things take a turn for the worse when her father tells her to sleep with a client and then offers her 2% of the profit. She sacrifices her self to avenge her father’s cruelty and later discloses her real identity to her father, which shakes the earth beneath his feet.

 

The movie is directed by Bappaditya Bandopadhyay and produced by K.D Singh. The music is composed by Bikram Ghsosh, Amar Haldipur and Sameer Phaterpekar.
