Kamal Amrohi’s Magnum Opus Pakeezah truly immortalized Meena Kumari Meena Kumari would have died an unsung death be it not for the release of Kamal Amrohi’s Magnum Opus Pakeezah, in which he had promised to immortalize Meena Kumari in Indian Cinema and frankly speaking he did too!! The movie took 17 years to complete and saw many up and down in its making. The movie went into trouble due to the couple’s separation. However, Kamal Sahab was desperate to complete the movie, but driven by guilt and regret he couldn’t approach Meena Kumari. But Meena Kumari’s ailing condition gave him sleepless nights, as his dream project now seemed to be in deep crises hence burying his ego’s he approached her to sort out things but by then it was too late. His only request to which Meena Kumari agreed to was to complete his movie. Kamal Amrohi completed Pakeezah with full dedication and when the film was completed he presented it as gift to Meena Kumari. When Meena Kumari saw the movie she was mesmerized by the film and had forgiven Amrohi for all the pain and sorrow

How young Meena was abandoned at birth by her father Tragedy for Meena Kumari began with her birth when she was almost thrown away by her angry father who was frustrated over his wife for delivering a third consecutive daughter. Close relatives of Meena Kumari disclose that when young Meena was born her father had no money to pay the hospital bill and in frustration he had thrown Meena at an orphanage but later when his wife insisted he brought her back home. How abandoned Meena becomes instrumental in supporting her family. Ironically Meena’s father who had abandoned Meena later loved her a great deal because it was young Meena who helped the family to survive by working in films as a child artist under the name Baby Meena. Actually Meena’s father was Music Director at a Parsi theatre and had failed miserable to make it big in Bollywood hence he experimented all his daughters, Khursheed, Madhuri and Mahjabeen into films to fulfill his un cherished dreams. But none could succeed except Mahjabeen aka Meena Kumari. Thus at the tender age of six, when other children of her age played carefree, little Meena was put under the harsh glare of studio lights and became instrumental in supporting her family. Meena Kumari wins two consecutive Filmfare awards Mahjabeen – caught the attention of film maker – Vijay Bhatt – who introduced her in his movie – ‘Leather Face’ (1938) as a child artist giving her a new ‘screen name’ as – Baby Meena – From ‘Leather Face’ to ‘Baiju Bawra’ it took 14 long years for Meena Kumari to come into limelight. After the phenomenal success of ‘Baiju Bawra’ she did Bimal Roy’s Parineeta. In this movie with her natural performance she introduced a ‘new era’ in the acting department of Indian cinema – where histrionics took over glamour as epitomized earlier by such supreme beauties of the 30’s & 40’s like Devika Rani Naseem Banu, Veena, Jayshree etc. What’s more for both Baiju Bawra (1954) and Parineeta (1955) she won the prestigious Filmfare award in the Best Actress category for two consecutive years. Tug of war between Meena Kumari and Nargis In the late 50 when Meena Kumari was dominating Indian Cinema with her acting prowess another actress Nargis gave her a tough fight with her brilliant performance in Mother India (1957). However the same year Meena Kumari too stunned both film critics and the audience with her bold and daring performance in L.V.Prasad’s strange social drama – Sharada, in which 24 year old Meena Kumari played the role of Raj Kapoor’s MOTHER!!! It was such an unconventional role that none of the tops actresses had courage to do but Meena Kumari took the challenge and came out with flying colors. Thus there was a great tug –of –war between Nargis and Meena Kumari for the coveted Filmfare Best actress award. When the D-Day came everybody awaited the Best actress award with bated breath and thumping hearts. And when the name of Nargis was announced for her larger than life performance in Mother India, there was a mixed reaction. Particularly the film critics were deeply hurt as they felt Meena Kumari’s electrifying performance was ‘better’ of the two. Hence in the annual Bengal Journalist Association Award the film critics awarded Meena Kumari as Best Actress. Few know that even the Filmfare jury was in dilemma and there was a division among the jury. A section had even recommended a ‘Special Acting award’ for Meena Kumari but it did not happen.

Meena Kumari weds her dream man When the going was great and everything from name, fame, money and even the so far eluding happiness seemed to be Meena’s for asking, entered Kamal Amrohi, the brilliant writer cum director, in her life. Though Amrohi was twice the age of Meena Kumari and also a married man yet Meena fell head over heal in love with the sensitive poet in Amrohi much against her father’s warning. Initial years of the duo were spent in romance and it’s reported that Kamal Amrohi had planned the movie Pakeezah during their honey moon. How Kamal Amrohi’s secretary slapping Meena Kumari proved the final nail in the coffin of their relation After the few years of romance and meena-kumari’s married life turned messy. In fact, in a lighter mood she had even written in one of her couplets – Dil sa jab sathi paaya, Bechaini bhi woh saath mein le aaya… Soon ego clashes began cracking the relation and to rub salt on injury Kamal Sahab’s regular interference in selecting Meena Kumari’s movies created a lot of problems and finally Kamal Amrohi’s constant negligence to Meena Kumari and more concentration on his work widened their gap which ultimately gave way when one evening Kamal Sahab’s secretary, Bagar Ali, in a fit of rage slapped Meena Kumari!!! The infamous Extramarital affair of Meena Kumari On her career front, Meena Kumari’s life may have seemed to be sailing smoothly but in the four walls of her house she was a depressed lonely lady wandering for her true love – which unfortunately she couldn’t derive, despite intimate friendship with many of her co-stars like Pradeep Kumar, Gulzar and the young dashing, handsome Punjabi jat – Dharmendra whom she promoted in many films including his career boasting ‘Phool aur Pathar’. Insiders reveal that for a while Meena Kumari thought she had found the love she longed for in Dharmendra, but once again it was a doomed relationship. She was heartbroken and again sought refuge in extreme alcoholism.

When Meena Kumari created Filmfare record – Becomes only actress to be nominated that year! After her rebellious outbreak from Kamal Amrohi, Meena Kumari took to heavy drinking and poetry to solace herself. In Guru Dutt’s ‘Sahib Bibi Aur GhulamMeena Kumari made her loneliness hauntingly vivid. She poured out all her hidden emotions so convincingly that her evocative portrayal of the suffering women struck a responsive chord in Millions of women. For ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ she deservedly won the Best actress award. In fact that year she made a kind of history, as she was the only actress to be nominated that year - the other two nominations were for her performance in ‘Aarti’ and ‘Main Chup Rahungi’. After this Meena Kumari went strength to strength representing a traditional woman who was divested of all its physical antecedents with movies like Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai, Dil ek Mandir, Chirag kahan roshni kahan, Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan, Kaajal etc. While she won loads of laurels for her emotional roles few recognized her mastery in lighter roles where she effortlessly matched with the comic of genius, Kishore Kumar, in movies like – ‘Shararat’ and ‘Ilzaam’. Further her performance with Dilip Kumar in ‘Azaad’ & ‘Kohinoor’ proved beyond doubt that the great tragedienne of Indian Cinema was equally adept in comedies too!
