Was a super model and the winner of the Miss Universe title pageant in 1994. She was the first Indian to win this crown across the various countries that participated . She won the the title of Femina Miss India in 1994 followed by her pageant in Manila , Philipines where she represented India. Sushmita created a history by adopting a baby girl whom she has named Renee in 2000 and she raised her as a single woman when she was all of 25 years old only, which was not socially acceptable to attain the guardianship of the child. However she won the case against High Court on the grounds of gaining on a Cause. In 2010 she adopted again a baby girl of three months old and named her Alisah. She walked the ramp for Manish Malhotra for the Empower Girl Child Show in 2012.
Sushmita Sen was born in a Bengali Family in Hyderabad. Her father was a former Indian Air force Wing Commander and her mother is a jewelry designer and owns a Dubai based store. She attended the Air force Golden Jubilee Institute in New Delhi and St. Ann’s High School in Secunderabad but she did not pursue her higher education
She attended various schools between Jorhat and Nagbut but spent most of her schooling days in the Air force base schools in Delhi. She was known to be a Tomboy and more of Boys as her friends. She speaks fluent English and flawless on at that but till the age of 16 she did not speak English and she subsequently mastered the English language with honors in English as a student and obtained a degree in journalism. She also speaks fluent Urdu as she spent a good part of her life in Hyderabad. Her first public appearance was at the Air force Club Beauty Contest at the age of 15 after which she did a few more fashion shows. That’s when in 1994 she decided to be a participant for the Femina Miss India and was pitted against the reigning favourite Aishwarya Rai Against whom she won the contest as the Femina Miss India while she took away the crown, Miss Rai was the runner up. Both the beauties of India went on to win the Miss Universe and Miss World titles respectively making India proud of the two most beautiful women in the world. Her final outfit for Miss Universe was made by a very lesser known tailor at Meena Bazar designed by her mother. She hasn’t considered herself as a classic beauty and has been leading quite an unconventional life. She ended up in many relationships but did not marry any of them. She wanted to be a mother so went ahead and fought the court and adopted baby girls. She owns a family owned business in Dubai and has renamed it ‘Renee’ since 1999.
After she completed her reign as the Miss Universe she started her career in Bollywood with the film Dastak and rose to stardom with the Tamil Musical Hit film Ratchagan starring opposite to Nagarjuna. She later got recognition for her role in the Hindi film Sirf Tum in 1999. She became an Actress soon after she had won the Beauty title across the Universe and went on to do roles in the film Biwi No.1 for which she has won an award in the supporting role. She was also nominated for her roles in the films Sirf Tum and Fiza in which she tried to create a niche for herself in the Indian Film cinema. Sushmita Sen has acted in several other films that did commercially very well and were considered to be successful films. Some of them were Aankhen in 2002, Main Hoon Na in 2004, which was her biggest commercial success till date.Followed by Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya in 2005, She received critical acclaim for her female oriented roles that she played in the films Filhaal in 2002, Samay in 2003, Chingaari in 2005, Zindaggi Rocks in 2006, Aag in 2007 and a few others. For the film Main Hoon Na the film grossed at Rs. 330,000,000 and was the second best selling film of that year Followed by her role as a lawyer in the film Main Aisa Hi Hoon opposite to Ajay Devgn in 2005 that received acclaim from her fans and audience alike. In 2010 Sushmita played the role of a successful super model called Shimmer in Dulha Mil Gaya .the film did moderately well at the Box office that year.
