Biography

Deepak started his career in the entertainment industry with a career in theatre. In 1994, he started with the eminent theatre director Arvind Gaur. His major plays were with Gaur, namely Tughlaq which was co-directed by Girish Karnad, Andha Yug, Final Solutions, Desire Under the Elms, Rakt Kalyan, Court Martial, Dario Fo’s Operation Three Star, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, The Good Person of Szechwan and many others.

He was with Asmita Theatre for six years, after which he joined Act One with director Pt. N.K.Sharma. He did plays like Aao Saathi Sapna Dekhen, Hamaar Baabujji ki Chhattri and Aksar Maine Socha Hai, to name a few.


He joined the film industry and received recognition for his role as Rajju in the film ‘Omkara’ in 2006 . He made his debut with the Hindi film Maqbool in 2003. He had a cameo role in Tanu Weds Manu in 2011 in which he was the sidekick to the protagonist Pappi for which he was much appreciated for the comedy. He also acted in films like Shaurya in 2008, Dabangg 2 in 2012, Chor Chor Super Chor in 2013, Tanu weds Manu in 2015, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in 2015, Hindi Medium in 2017 and Angrezi Medium in 2020. 

He acted in a short film, Midnight Lost and Found. 


He also did a bilingual film in Tamil which was his debut in 13B: Fear Has A New Address.


Deepak Dobriyal is a recipient of several awards which include a Filmfare Award, Filmfare Award Marathi and a Maharashtra State Film Award. He also won the nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Pappi in Tanu Weds Manu.

He was also nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in the film Hindi Medium. 

He won the Filmfare Special Award in 2006 for Omkara for his role as Rajju Tiwary. 

He won the Filmfare Award for Marathi Best Actor for his role as Madhav in the film Baba in 2019.

In 2020, he got nominated for his role as Gopi Bansal in Angrezi Medium. 

He acted in the short film Kachche Din in 2020 and in 2021, in the film Aafat-E-Isha in Zee5 and in Good Luck Jerry which streamed on Disney+Hotstar. In 2022, he acted in Bhediya and Bholaa. In 2023, he acted in Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo and Sector 36, Jugnuma – The Fable.

His most recent film is as Gul in Son of Sardaar 2, released in 2025.
